Today, intricate detail on slate gravestones in our local cemetery in Fair Haven, Vermont is as crisp as it was when it was carved in the 1850’s. This is because slate is virtually non-absorbent and thus doesn’t crack and spall out through free-thaw cycles. Our slates are known for simple natural beauty, longevity and low maintenance. We produce custom slate gravestones and stone monuments in several finishes. We can accommodate any design possible.

Gravestones and monuments are generally custom-fabricated out of large stones.
Some materials are “unfading”, meaning they will hold their basic color even after many years of exterior use. Others are “weathering” or “semi-weathering”, meaning they will change color (usually to shades of brown) when used outside. A stone’s weathering characteristic is primarily an aesthetic consideration. “Weathering” in and of itself does not adversely affect the performance or durability of a stone. See stones below for weathering characteristics.
Our slates and quartzites and some marbles are durable, relatively even surfaced, non-absorptive, exceptionally strong and hard, dense and fireproof. They also perform very well when subject to freeze-thaw cycles.
Natural Cleft – a textured, natural finish, both visually and to the touch. Achieved by splitting the stone along its cleave with a hammer and chisel.
Honed – an extremely smooth, eggshell finish. Achieved with the use of fine diamonds.
Custom sizes for gravestones and monuments depend on stone selected, finish, thickness and other factors.
